First Steps in Walking the Divine Path with Equality

This is taken from my Satsang in Class 12 of my weekly Youtube meditation class in the Yogic tradition, and it is part 2 of my teaching on Spiritual Vision and our need to accelerate it through our practice and dedication to Yoga . . . bringing together a few principles of practice which take us on our first steps to opening, and expanding our awareness so that with practice, and dedication to our practice, our Sadhana, with Yoga we can accelerate our spiritual vision to live with Divine Communication in our lives as we walk the Divine Path . . .

With Yoga, we balance in posture and relaxation with samastitihi, equal standing . . . bringing balance to our consciousness with physical balance and bodymind awareness . . . which is also a coming into the present and being in the now of our practice, aware that all things are equal in this moment . . .

With Pranayama and breath flow with Sama Vritti practice to bring equal flow of breaths, or fluctuations in our breathing, for balance in consciousness at the level of the breath and energy in our subtle bodies . . . bringing a balance to the inner and outer experience . . . life flowing in and life within us flowing . . . in this constant dance of energy . . . balance being the self-control we can bring to this constant dance . . .

And with Samadrishti in contemplation, as we will practice now in Satsang, for our understanding of expectation in expanding our spiritual vision . . . the enlightened awareness practice of equality for balance . . .

So . . . Samadrishti . . . the Drishtis in Yoga are the gazes . . such as nose-tip gazing, focus on the eyebrow centre . . . or horizon gazes. There are 9 of these physical focussing gazes . . . but there is also the drishti which focuses our consciousness on the concept, and our belief in Yoga, that as the Divine is in all things, we see all things as equal . . . and especially, all people are equal and we practice this equality of vision by honouring the spirit that dwells within each and every one of us . . . our practice of Namaste . . .

We use our belief in Samdrishti, equality, equal vision to bring equanimity, the quality of steadiness of mind and also nobility of character . . . seeing that as the divine is in all things, all things are equal . . . and balance is in all things.

Which ultimately means we can let go of expectations which are not our own, and which aren’t serving us positively . . . expectations based on life choices of parents, family or community or circumstances now outdated and outgrown . . . expectations based on old fears or outworn images for our lives . . . because the dance of energy which is the Divine and Divine Mother flowing through all things is constantly balancing and moving us forward along the path chosen by our souls . . . and, chosen by us all collectively at this moment in our history and evolution.

Letting go of expectations means growing, expanding, moving . . . always into balance . . . living with expectation of divine communication in all things . . . spiritual vision . . .

With our dedication and devotion to practice in Yoga, the whole of Yoga, we’re expanding our spiritual vision, seeing the Divine action in all things, with practices which bring balance to our bodymind, our character and actions, and our consciousness . . .

. . . in our lives this means . . . we have the inner strength, and wisdom to support the transformative flow of energy and love from our heart chakra . . . and we can, with balance, transform this into SOMETHING that positively affects us, our lives, our planet, our future . . . and our Sadhana, our practice when we merge with the Divine consciously and with total devotion, then can meet our lives . . .

. . . because we see “the one” in everything around us, Spiritual Vision, we can live with Divine Communication in our lives . . . which primarily means listening . . . watching . . . observing . . . interpreting meaning and direction . . . then we can expand and accelerate our Spiritual Vision and work with it in our lives as we walk the Divine path.

Hope . . . for humanity. How?

Hope. How . . . ? Further Than Yoga is all I can think of . . .

They used to say “Education. Education. Education.” As in, “education is everything.” But it is not – not unless communication is good.

You would think what with all the media resources we have nowadays, communication is better than ever before. But it isn’t. Yes, there’s MORE of it – but no depth, real skill, heart-based understanding and compassion. And truth . . . ? I don’t think so – especially not about waking up what is sleeping in our memories . . . consciousness, and what we will need from our distilled wisdom to take us forward into the future as Humanity.

Humanity needs hope. How? Well, as humankind we actually always have had that in our inner nature . . . it’s one of the life powers we’re born with, and need to tune into.

When I say “further than yoga “ I’m not disparaging yoga the practice or the very sincere yoga teachers we have around us, but I have seen for a few years now that there’s been a settling into promoting various styles of physical, yoga practices to the benefit of media and some teachers, and to the detriment of the whole of Yoga . . . which is intended to take us further than the physical benefits or in fact the destressing mental and emotional benefits. I teach that yoga is the way we live with the divine in our lives, because we can experience direct divine communion through our practice . . . you get to the point whereby you realise that to give up what seems to be control in your life and power over externals, IS the power in Yoga when you develop the maturity and patience to wait for God/Goddess to tell you what you are here for.

And this practice, as I teach, comes directly from Patanjali’s – known as the father of Yoga – 8-step path to enlightenment compiled probably 1,700 – 2,500 years ago, from ancient knowledge prior to that and before the christian era . . . it’s beyond what we know currently . . . and came from knowledge that didn’t have to be recorded.

Yoga is know as our Union with Divine consciousness . . . but there is another translation as with most Sanskrit words, that Yoga is a binding – a practice which binds us with the Divine . . . and the path of Yoga takes us to Samadhi, a state which binds us with higher consciousness . . . and it is also a belief that there is a transcendent source of energy and your life has a purpose which binds you in a commitment through which this vital power flows . . . your bliss . . . it is your bond with life and divinity . . . Existence flowing through you.

When we practice together in this spirit we are bonded – not separated by styles, forms, lifestyle, disposable income etc . . . unified by simple, practical teaching and practices . . . we lift up, individually, to meet the Divine, our source, God/Goddess, the light, Mother . . we open up spiritually . . . we open up to our own Divinity . . . and you yourself understand direct communion with the Divine . . .

. . . being taken beyond what we know of heaven and earth to connect with that part of yourself that is connected, to expand your understanding . . . of the ever-unfolding journey through birth, life, death and regeneration.

Why is this important . . . what does it mean? . . . why are we doing this . . . ?

. . . because this is the way some of us need, to see our own way forward, to grow and mature – because that is what life, your soul, demands – to expand our minds and our perceptions of life.

Life is happening and the continuity of life and life cycles. . . it’s important to me that we all stop waiting and do something now.

Your connection with divinity affects me, your friends, your neighbours and community, the world, the environment and the planet. We need to get on with it, well those of us who can anyway – enlightenment is now . . . so I’m teaching Further than Yoga, and this is how you do it . . .

Be with a Teacher who can initiate you, teach you guiding principles from the Ancient Teachings of the whole of Yoga and instruct you with a practicality of doing this for yourself in your daily life. Practice, and practice devotion to practice, which helps us see the Divine: in our signs, symbols and daily messages on our Soul’s path . . . living with this in our daily life and so that we can see our own way forward . . . and wait for God/Goddess to tell us what is needed.

Freeing Ourself to be Human

Freeing ourselves to be human is a way of opening up to true compassion, and a way of living with a kind, pure heart: a little bit of the Zen of living simply . . . but which adds up to a totality.

This is healing, and the healing comes in the acceptance that the whole world is hurting and crying out.  So we learn to listen to the voiceless voice of the world: the cry from humanity’s heart.

You practice this self-healing by opening yourself to whatever situation you may be in. It’s no use saying that the suffering out there in the world is foreign, that it doesn’t belong to you. You have to take care of it every day, because it has already appeared. Just keep yourself open to it. And in so doing, give yourself some life-freedom.

Zen practice is the practice of doing this, sitting and knowing that we ourselves contain the entire world: this is a powerful Zen practice – Eat Your Shadow.

In Eastern philosophies and cultural ways of being, the light, the energy, the hope has been found in dealing with the Shadow. You know, as the dark Goddess Kali, embodies for us.

As far as I know, this self-growth practice and process pre-dated Hinduism in India – moving from the dark to the light has always been the soul’s path in Yoga, with the soul-power manifesting right at the moment you discern what the choice before you is. As we know this happens at Guru [Agya] Chakra . . .

So, how do you Eat Your Shadow?

First, Make Friends with the Unacceptable:  Become aware of the qualities you find ugly or unacceptable in others, writing down a list if that helps. Then, realise that these are qualities that also exist within yourself. Make peace with these qualities, both within and without.

The more we repress aspects of ourselves, hiding from them and ignoring them, and project them onto others, the more power these qualities have over us, and the greater likelihood they will appear in our lives as symptoms, bad dreams, or repetitive situations which we feel we have no control over. This has been called the shadow of a human being since ancient times. Carl Jung did much good work on the way we dump all the unacceptable parts of ourselves into our unconscious, and let it fester there as we hide from it.  We then see these qualities in those people and situations that are around us. [As far as I can tell, Jung became aware of this whole process through his knowledge of Yoga, and practices of working with the Root [Muladhara] Chakra.

Eat Your Shadow:  In order to be free of this process, we “eat our shadow”.  This means we must reclaim and own these hidden qualities, realise they are part of us, and welcome them into our lives.  The very act of welcoming certain qualities or people takes the steam out of them.  We can then absorb the energy and transform them into something constructive.

Zen practice is the practice of doing this – “eating the shadow”, sitting and knowing that we ourselves contain the entire world.

Balance is what happens when you know in your heart something is right

 

I had a very clear vision of a network . . . and it wasn’t a social network. This vision brought a deep inner relaxation. What was coming to me was, that Yoga Teachers today might start to do what we are here for – to bring a rest and reprieve for our students from the stresses and strains of our modern world.

We are a Tribe.

We have different psychological crises than we did 2,000 – 6,000 years ago. We have different needs of our inner world, to balance our emotions so that we can handle our environment – which means “Balance” . . . our needs for balance are different today from when yoga was codified, or structured, or put into “paths” and systematised by “lineages” by the yoga masters of the past.

My heart was telling me something was not right – and, truth be told, it has been telling me this for quite some time.

My heart is usually right.

A couple of things were troubling me: media is about images and content. Yoga is full of images and content – but that is the surface, as we know. The surface illusion of “Yoga” has taken over, it suits the media . . . and to an extent it has suited us as teachers for a while: coverage of world yoga day recently was vast.

In one way that was heartlifting and positive, and yet . . . ?

The other thing that has been troubling me, for quite some time, is the need to meet the expectations of this vast image of yoga by fitting in: we fit in with community activities, we fit in with expectations of our “image” – we blog for free, we dilute our classes to suit lifestyles: both our students’ and our own. We have to pay big hire fees for our practice spaces, and we can’t always control the noise/light/heat/cold of the environment. Classes are only viable in certain social times: we accommodate by reducing the amount of time spent in pranayama to 5 minutes in an hour and a half class – and the cost has been . . . ?

The cost has been, I consider, to our compassion and our wisdom as teachers.

But mainly at a cost to our authority.

The cost has also been in diluting the yoga teachers experience in nurturing and compassion . . . because what has happened is that in the end, what is a “mind-body-spirit” path to inner life and freedom has become body-oriented with some mind-practice and the spirit has been paid lip-service to. Because most of our yoga teachers today do not spend time and practice in meditation – a reversal has taken place since my time of training when meditation was the primary focus, with philosophy and yogasanas making up our 8-steps to Samadhi.

And the Divine is our source.

But the real cost, as I have been seeing it for a good while now, is that we have surrendered our role of nurturers of the mind to a global industry in “Mindfulness” – and mindfulness does not accept the universal law of three (which is one of the abiding laws of karma) that there will always be polarities between negative and positive, “right and wrong”, “good and bad”, weak and strong – yet we grow spiritually through these because we recognise that the Divine is the source of vitality in our life: Mindfulness has become the new psychotherapy, attempting to cure imbalance with imbalance: a prescription.

Our yoga teachers need nurturing and developing, in our tradition of training the mind to train the soul . . . which is our purpose for being. Remembering the Seeds of our Samadhi is so important for us – and nurturing and growing these seeds.

If we don’t, as teachers: how do we do this for the world?

How else could we reach into our own hearts for balance, and know it is right to do this for our world?

You Might Not Know How Yoga Meditation Affects Your Life

You might not know how Yoga Meditation affects your life . . . even if you’re in regular practice of Hatha Yoga, yogasanas the physical postures of Yoga.

Well, many of us do know . . . our practice sorts out our minds, resets our buttons, unscrambles our emotions and gives us a strength and inner peace that is astonishing.

And we do know this because the path of Yoga, especially Yoga of the Mind [Raja Yoga] is an initiation process into one of the Ancient Mystery Schools, and you are initiated by an Initiate, Teacher, Master or Guru. The Knowledge of Life, Life Force and Life Power is transmitted to you. If you are open and ready for the teaching. We get what we need from the process, and this is the received wisdom that says: “the more you need it, the more you experience the power.”

The whole purpose of our practice is for you to live a more meaningful life with point and purpose which is satisfying to both your heart and your Soul. It’s a journey to freedom from difficulties, whereby you work through emotional, physical, mental and psychological blocks, crises and growth stages: and obviously all that can involve karma.

The freedom you reach is an inner freedom that lets you do what you’re supposed to be doing with your life here on the planet at this time: follow your Bliss.

My teachings are of the Essence of Yoga Meditation, which basically means the Steps to Samadhi, and my approach is “Further Than Yoga” – accelerating our Spiritual Vision so we can work with Divine Communication in our lives – through our yoga practice.

My website, linked here and also  to the Facebook page, is my “Ashram” as I’ve been entrusted by the Divine Mother to open up the energies and teach from here – what would seem to be a very innocuous place on a WordPress site, coming from a small Irish village – but it’s a power center.

And the Ashram in our yogic tradition is a simple place for practice which acts as an energetic center – and it is the Guru or Master who acts as the energy generator and regulator. The Ashram is a place for retreat – the word also translates as the “workplace” where the “work” is our practice. It’s a place to live simply, take teachings and practice.

I’m finding new ways to do that online, while upholding the best in the traditions.

I am considered as a Master in India as a result of my writings over the years – and I was invited to contribute as a Master by Times of India to their online global community Speaking Tree.

The traditional “Steps to Samadhi” in yoga meditation are also known as Patanjali’s 8-step path and Raja Yoga. Samadhi is the state of inner peace and balance through which we join with Divine Consciousness, where we can have our “Conversations with God” – it’s a bringing together of energies, human and Divine, a union or merging at our highest level of consciousness. So you can be a better human being.

I teach in a non-denominational style, and all religions and beliefs are respected: always remember that you are perfect, then your frame of reference will be an inner one at the soul level; and we’re making the Mindbody system a more comfortable place for the Spirit to dwell while we’re here and hopefully we’ll leave the Planet a better place for those who come after us.

What My Heart Is Telling Me

I had a major Venus and Saturn alignment to start the year, January 1 2018, For me, it’s about us all being united through our hearts and my role as a Teacher and grounding this.

What my heart is telling me is that I can no longer be caught up in the Western way of charging for Meditation. It doesn’t suit me and it gives me heartache and headaches.

My Teacher initiated me to initiate those who need it into a system which empowers us to live well with Life Force, which as Teachers we do by Transmission of the Knowledge. This is always given freely to those who are committed to learning.

Or, it was – until the West [and India now] – got hold of the idea that it could be packaged and sold as a product. “It” can’t be, else it is diluted.

I can’t do that. The force of the Life Force is too powerful and the Teacher knows that it is meant to be shared and not diluted.

So, today my heart is telling me to be who I truly am, to set my own heart free and enjoy the joy of Teaching and sharing freely.

I have plenty of potential for making money through my writing and future TV projects. From today, I’ll work through and set the various Meditation downloads and courses free, removing the charges – and I’ll set myself free from being caught up in a system I never was supposed to be part of.

It’ll take a while but it will be a liberating labor of love for me. So if you do come across a product or course that you would like to have for your growth and development in the meanwhile, do please send a message and I’ll send you a link to the free download.

18 Ways to Find Balance in 2018

I usually publish my list in January every year, and have done since 2012! But this year I want to revive a ritual from the Ancients, where the last 5 days of the year were held as a “window for magic” . . . So, this is the list of ways for 2018:

Balance in your life, as far as I know it as a teacher, comes with the steps to life-freedom, which is the philosophy of Yoga, together with practice, and values for your life . . . but, there have been so many wise teachers, with much wisdom to share with us and many of us are seeking balance in our lives. It’s an approach to living that can go a long way in a year.

For 2018 I wanted to write about a lasting approach to getting balance. I couldn’t get to interview the people I would have liked to for this article, and so this is a roundup of what I think they would have answered to my question “How do you get Balance?” based on their famous quotations.

1. Your Meditation is your medication … once it has worked for you, you throw away the medication, throw away the Meditation and get a new one. Osho.

2. If you can’t let it go, let it in. Dainin Katagiri

3. You can’t get there from here, and besides there is no place to go. Sheldon Kopp
